About us

Crain Communications GmbH

Crain Communications GmbH was founded on February 1, 2001. Four months later, the company moved into its new offices at the Technopark complex in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, Germany. By the end of 2001, the new 20-strong team, established by publisher Helmut Kluger, was almost complete. The first issue of Automobilwoche was published on January 21, 2002. It quickly became one of the most successful newcomers on the market and the most quoted auto-industry publication. Meanwhile, Automobilwoche has continued to go from strength to strength: In May 2005, it was named Trade Publication of the Year by the German Business-to-Business Publishers' Association (Deutsche Fachpresse).

Crain Communications Inc.

Crain Communications is one of America's leading family-owned business-to-business publishing houses, with offices in Detroit, Chicago, New York, London (UK), and Munich (Germany). The company has a portfolio of over 30 titles and Websites, and is also a successful conference organizer.

Crain Communications employs more than 1200 people at 20 locations worldwide, and was founded in 1916. Since then, it has enjoyed a track record of continuous growth, stable management and editorial integrity.

Company founder G. D. Crain jr. helped define standards of excellence in business-to-business publishing. He served as the company's leader for nearly six decades until his death in 1973. His widow, Gertrude R. Crain, then followed as Chairman for the next 23 years, establishing new traditions for women in business management both within Crain and outside the company. Today Keith E. Crain, Chairman, and his elder brother Rance E. Crain, President, continue their parents’ legacy: High journalistic standards, and a commitment to diversity and family orientation.
