WHAT DOES YOUR LAMBDA SENSOR DO?
The lambda sensor is a device which determines the lambda content of the exhaust gas. Since the
amount of lambda in the exhaust gas is a very good indicator of combustion efficiency, it is also the best place to monitor the air fuel ratio.
WHERE IS YOUR LAMBDA SENSOR LOCATED?
Lambda sensors are located on the exhaust pipe(s). They are screwed into
the exhaust pipe via a bung. Each car generally has 1 lambda sensor located
before and after the catalytic converter. For engines with multiple banks, there will be an lambda sensor before and after the catalytic converter in each bank.
WHY DO LAMBDA SENSORS FAIL?
Lambda sensors can fail when the sensor’s ceramic element is exposed to certain types of silicone
compounds or when an oil-burning engine leads to the sensor becoming oil-fouled. Also, a small
amount of tetra-ethyl lead in the gasoline can kill an lambda sensor. Over-the-counter fuel additives, which are not “lambda sensor safe” can also kill an lambda sensor.
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR LAMBDA SENSOR IS FAULTY OR FAILING?
Symptoms of a failing lambda sensor are surging, hesitation, poor overall performance, falling fuel
mileage, rough idling, a failed emissions test, and an inefficient or clogged catalytic converter.

WHAT DOES YOUR IGNITION COIL DO?
The Ignition Coil takes the battery’s 12-volt output and amplifies it to over 30,000 volts. This higher
voltage is then routed to the spark plug via coil boot or wire, which ignites the air/fuel mixture inside
engine’s cylinder.
WHERE IS THE IGNITION COIL LOCATED?
The Ignition Coil is mounted either directly to the top of the spark plug or near the spark plugs. The
Ignition Coil is connected to the spark plug(s) by the coil boot or ignition wires.
WHY DOES THE IGNITION COIL FAIL?
The primary cause for failure is voltage overload caused by worn spark plugs or damaged cables
and wires. The hot and cold temperatures plus engine vibrations can cause the coil’s windings and
insulation to break.
HOW TO DIAGNOSE A FAULTY IGNITION COIL?
The vehicle could experience misfiring, backfiring, hard starting, poor performance, or poor fuel
economy - these are all potential signs of a faulty ignition coil. The vehicle’s check engine light could be triggered by a faulty ignition coil.
HOW DO YOU FIX FAULTY IGNITION COILS?

Ignition Wire Sets
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR IGNITION WIRE ARE FAILING?
Common signs of failing spark plug wires include a decrease in power, acceleration, and fuel efficiency. Your check engine light will come one if your engine’s computer detects an issue that could increase vehicle emissions, such as a misfire caused by a bad spark plug wire. If your engine is running poorly or experiencing rough idle, an arcing or high resistance plug wire will prevent the spark plug from firing properly. This results in incomplete combustion, causing the
engine to misfire. As a result, the car may hesitate, shudder or stall. Bad spark plug wires can increase the hydrocarbon emissions from your vehicle. This can cause it to fail a state emissions inspection. Incomplete combustion usually creates poor fuel economy. A bad spark plug wire may result in more frequent trips to the gas station and sluggish acceleration.
WHY DO IGNITION WIRES FAIL?
Vibration damage – Constant wear and tear caused by engine vibration can loosen the electrical connection at the spark plug. This causes an increase in the voltage required to fire the spark plug, which could damage the ignition coil as well as the spark plug wires.
Heat damage – Engine heat can burn wire insulation and boots. A damaged boot can impede proper spark plug wire seating and performance. Wire insulation that’s damaged by head can allow voltage to jump to the ground rather than jumping the gap at the bottom of the spark plug. Old cables may dry out, which may lead to cracks in the insulation.
Abrasion damage – When spark plug wires rub against engine parts, particularly sharp edges, it causes cuts and breaks in the insulation. Once this happens, voltage can jump to ground instead of reaching the spark plug.

Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensors
WHAT DOES YOUR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR DO?
The EGTS is responsible for measuring and monitoring the temperature of exhaust gas across multiple locations in the exhaust system. In gasoline engines, if the sensor detects excessive temperatures, the ECU will reduce the temperature by lowering boost pressure. In diesel engines, the sensor is used to monitor the temperature of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to determine the exact temperature for regeneration.
WHERE IS THE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR LOCATED?
It is common to have three or more sensors fitted to the exhaust
- T3 – pre-Turbocharger (TBC)
- T2/T4 – post Turbocharger (TBC)
- T5/T13 – post Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)
- T6 – post Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF)
- T7 – pre–Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
- T8 – post Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
- T9/ T11 – pre-Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
- T10/ T12 – post Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR)
WHY DO EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSORS FAIL?
Exposure to excessively high temperatures, up to 900°C, over extended periods of time, is the main cause for failure. Also, damage to wires due to excessive vibrations, as well as exposure to other contaminants, fluids such as oil or antifreeze, can all affect the sensor’s functionality.
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR IS FAULTY OR
FAILING?
A faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can negatively impact a SCR system, resulting in the
following symptoms:
- Check engine light illumination
- Reduced fuel efficiency
- Unnecessary DPF regeneration
- Failed emissions test
HOW TO DIAGNOSE A FAULTY OR FAILING EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE SENSOR?
- Perform an electronic test and read any fault codes using a diagnostic tool
- Inspect the connectors and wiring for signs of corrosion, breaks or loose connections
- Check the sensor for any suit build-up; remove contaminants with a clean, dry cloth
