Saint-Gobain Sekurit presents a new windscreen named “Touch Control”, a system for activating a number of functions, like defrosting for instance, by simply pressing on the glass. This new concept of digitally-controlled glazing is particularly designed for autonomous and semi-autonomous vehicles.

This project shows the deep transformation affecting automotive glass. Saint-Gobain Sekurit is working on the whole glazed surface of the vehicle interior, to enhance comfort and turn it into a medium for communicating information.

SG Sekurit Touch Control is a digitally-controlled windshield. By pressing on the glass you can activate the following functions:

1. Defrosting
2. Navigation
3. Turn from dark to clear
4. Turn from opaque to transparent

The innovative SGS ClimaCoat incorporates two key benefits in one windscreen: heat reflection in summer and heating in winter. Nowadays, air conditioning contributes significantly to the fuel consumption of a vehicle. By equipping the car with optimized solar control glazing, the A/C fuel consumption can be strongly reduced. ClimaCoat has approximately twice the performance as today’s heat-reflecting products. The amount of heat energy entering a car with green tinted standard glazing is 65%, whereas with the SGS ClimaCoat coating only 40% enters the vehicle. Consequently, the interior of the vehicle stays cooler, the air conditioning runs less, CO2 emissions are reduced, and comfortable temperatures can be reached faster than with standard glazing.

Additionally, the coating is so conductive that it can easily be heated in winter by applying an electric voltage. When electricity flows the metallic coating warms up and so the glazing is heated. ClimaCoat represents a powerful leading solution that guards against ice, mist and fog, thus maintaining clear vision – the perfect all-weather windshield.

When we look what is happening in the market with regard to fuel efficiency, one thing is for sure: thinner glass will come. This is not only true for windshields, but also for sidelites and backlites.

Over the last 20 years, there has been an evolution in the thickness of laminated windshields from 6 mm to 5 and 4.5 mm.

A 0.5 mm thinner glass already results in a weight saving of 1.5 kg. Considering that the weight of glass for a full car set for e.g. a VW Golf is approx. 37 kg, this is a substantial improvement. Being aware of the growing importance of lightweight, Sekurit contributes with innovative solutions.

For 2013, the introduction of 4 mm windshields has been announced, which will result in further weight reductions.
For sidelites and backlites, the use of tempered glass is common. The thickness of thin tempered glass varies between 3. 85 and 2.85 mm with a weight saving for reduced thickness by 1 mm of 2.5 kg per m2. Since 2004 thin laminated glazing for sidelites has been on the market for front doors. Their total thickness of 4 mm has resulted in a weight reduction of 2.5 kg per m2 in comparison to common 5 mm glazing.
