For the Euro 6 emission standard, the NOx sensor is the most important link between the engine management system and the SCR exhaust aftertreatment. The sensor takes over the measurements of the lambda probe required for mixture preparation and also records the proportion of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas. This highly complex method of measuring chemical parameters takes place in real time. Without precise measurement results from the NOx sensor, the amount of urea (AdBlue) cannot be determined correctly and the SCR catalytic converter does not deliver the required conversion rate of the nitrogen oxides.

Wear and Consequences

Due to the use at high ambient temperatures in the exhaust system, the reaction behavior of the ceramic measuring head changes during the mileage. As a result, the broadband measurements are inaccurate and no longer match the target values ​​of the control unit. The self-monitoring of the sensor results in a fault memory entry due to the faulty exhaust gas cleaning; the vehicle goes into the emergency mode, the NOX sensor must be replaced as soon as possible.
