A leaf spring is used, among other things, for suspension on cars in the weight class 2.5 tonnes and upwards. This is because a coil spring is not strong enough when it comes to this weight class.

Leaf springs are made of spring steel with high elasticity, great strength and good durability. However, they should still be inspected and tested every 10,000 kilometers, and this should be done by a specialist.

The most common cause of defective leaf springs is that one or more components of the spring are of poor quality. The service life of a good leaf spring should preferably be 100,000 - 150,000 kilometers driven, but this durability is greatly affected by e.g. aggressive driving style, persistent overload of the car, failure to comply with service inspections as well as off-road driving.
