25.09.2023

Aimed at addressing the concerns to make natural gas the fuel of choice in the transportation segment, the 7th edition of Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) India Summit ended with robust panel discussions – paving way forward for India’s transition towards clean energy.

Held in New Delhi from 20 - 21 July 2023, the two-day conference brought together various policymakers, stakeholders and industry experts from sectors like oil, gas, energy, automobiles and more under a single roof. Attracting 200+ attendees from various industry sectors, the aim of the conference was to surface ideas to promote the natural gas adoption and thereby reduce the environmental impact.

The summit bought to highlight the ideas and approaches to transition the vehicles and power-up the future to align with the Indian government’s mission to achieve the target of net zero emissions by 2070. The pivotal platform illustrated the importance of natural gas stressed on encouraging clean mobility through clean fuel alternatives like Green - Blue Hydrogen, H-CNG, Bio-CNG and other Bio-fuels, to achieve decarbonised mobility.

The summit was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Dr Hanif Qureshi, IPS and Hon’ble Joint Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India. On sharing his thoughts on the trending topic, he said: “By bringing industry stakeholders together under one roof, the significant platform highlights the importance of natural gas in the auto industry and the way forward in terms of challenges faced, opportunities and overall acceptance of the clean fuel. NGV is critical for having a clean energy future and therefore it is encouraging to see such a platform being laid to emphasize the use of a cleaner and low-cost natural gas as an alternative to traditional fuels ensuring a better life ahead. Messe Frankfurt Trade Fairs India is playing a major role in driving India towards substantial clean mobility.”

The attendees explored and discovered the recent developments and future trends emerging in the natural gas vehicle industry. Moreover, the forum also presented to be a high-value place to network and expand business opportunities. Eminent speakers from various Indian geographies discussed the concurrent issues, advancements and opportunities in the sector.

Associated as a speaker for the conference, Mr AK Tripathi, Executive Director, O&M-CO, GAIL India, expressed: “NGV India has been a very fruitful summit. It has brought all the industry stakeholders with a shared vision under one roof.  I hope the knowledge and insights shared during this forum will help all of us meet the goal of ‘clean mobility’.  It will certainly be helpful in creating a better, greener environment for India and the entire world.”

Sharing similar sentiments, Mr Alok Sharma, Executive Director, Centre for High Technology (CHT) - Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, stated: “The seminars primarily spoke about transitioning towards the NGV driven ecosystem and how hydrogen can be a new player in ‘Clean Mobility Fuels’ mix.  Hydrogen will slowly penetrate into the transportation sector and in this direction, the Ministry of Petroleum and the companies working under it, are already taking some initiatives where green hydrogen can be produced and supplied for captive use in the refineries. However, for green hydrogen to be used in the transportation sector, it needs to be tracked and tested first, before it gets implement on a larger scale.”

Ms Mariarosa Baroni, President, NGV Italy; President of the World Gas Mobility Council (WGMC), shared her views by stating: “India is good country and is going to gain good fortune when it comes to using alternative fuel and the best alternative right now is natural gas. We need to think and plan for natural gas together with hydrogen and bio gas in order to have a clean alternative fuel. This way I feel the life of natural gas, bio material, CNG and hydrogen will be a long way to go and it will be the best answer for transport globally.”
