Automechanika Frankfurt 2018: More innovations than ever before

Sep 11, 2018

The winners of the Automechanika Innovation Awards 2018 have been announced. The awards have been given in honour of innovations in the automotive aftermarket since 1996. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Automechanika Frankfurt, the concept has been revised and subdivided into three categories – Nominee, Finalist and Winner – with the aim of making the innovative entries more visible.

The best of the best entries for the Automechanika Innovation Awards were honoured at a presentation ceremony today. The ten winners in three categories were chosen from a total of 120 entries. The jury of eight experts was made up of representatives of the industry, trade, associations, science and media. The judging criteria were innovative content, solution excellence, functionality, aftermarket relevance, safety, security, quality, contribution to environmental protection, resource conservation and sustainability. The winning Innovation Award entries can be seen together with those of the finalists in an interactive exhibition in the ‘Festhalle’ of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre. For the first time, there will be guided tours to the exhibition stands of these companies during the fair.

“Many companies orientate their innovation cycles to the dates of Automechanika Frankfurt”, said Automechanika Frankfurt Director Olaf Musshoff at the awards ceremony on the first day of the fair. “The density of innovations at Automechanika is incomparable. The Automechanika Innovation Awards are a valuable orientation aid for tomorrow’s trends in the sector. The ‘Festhalle’ should be an important port of call for every visitor to the fair.”

Automechanika exhibitors were invited to enter their new products in twelve categories: Parts & Components, Electronics & Systems, Accessories & Customizing, Repair & Diagnostics, Repair & Maintenance, Dealer & Workshop Management, Car Wash, Care & Reconditioning, Alternative Drive Systems & Digital Solutions, Tires, Classic Cars Products & Services, OE Products & Services and Truck Products & Services.

Around a third of entries came from Germany and two thirds from abroad whereby 10 percent of the latter were from outside the European Union. There was also an above-average increase in the number of entries from outside Germany – a trend that has been apparent for several years.

The majority of entries were products and solutions from the workshop-equipment segment, including tools, measuring devices and aids, in the categories ‘Repair & Maintenance’ and ‘Repair & Diagnostics’. Altogether, they accounted for 40 percent of this year’s entries.

The digitalisation megatrend is unmistakable not only in the vehicle-technology segment but also in the dealer and workshop field. The entries ranged from e-call, via remote control, smart battery, cloud-based expert systems, new IT systems and components, to virtual reality. Another megatrend is the ‘clean’ vehicle with the entries including products for exhaust-emission measurement, a new injection technology for direct-injection petrol engines and electro-mobility products.

For the second time, the jury gave the ‘Green Award’ for the most sustainable new product among all entries, with Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH being singled out for this special prize for its Electronic Air Control (EAC). This new product was also the winner of the Automechanika Innovation Award in Truck Products & Services category.

The expert members of the jury who evaluated the entries were:

  • Hartmut Abeln, CEO TÜV NORD Mobilität GmbH & Co. KG
  • Dr. Axel Glanz, CEO, Innovations Institute and spokesman of the Innovation Association for the German Industry (IDWI)
  • Edwin Grabowski, publisher, Car Wash Info
  • Wilhelm Hülsdonk, Vice President, Federation of the German Motor Vehicle Trade (ZDK)

  • Burkhard Riering, Editor-in-Chief, Automobilwoche, Crain Communications GmbH
